Knitting 101 - all the basics in one place.

Casting On (CO). This is the very first thing you have to do in order to start a knitting project. In this video tutorial, I take you through 3 simple ways to get you started.

Garter Stitch is simply knitting every stitch. In a pattern you will see: RS *K* or just K. WS *K*
K
Knit stitch (K) is the first stitch you will learn. I will show you how to hold your yarn in 2 different ways and talk about how to get your knitting started. Watch this video to learn how to knit and purl.
Knit 2 Together (K2tog) is a decreasing stitch where you knit 2 stitches into one. See how to make this stitch here.
M
Moss Stitch is a lovely simple textured stitch. On an even number of stitches: RS *K1, P1* WS *P1, K1* See how to knit this stitch here.
P
Purl stitch (P) is the counterpart to the knit stitch and completes the basic stitches. Once you can do the 2 stitches in this video the world is your oyster. Watch this video to learn how to knit and purl.
R
Rib Stitch gives you an elastic fabric; great for collars, cuffs and hat brims. The standard stitch is a repeat of knit 1, purl 1 (*K1, P1*) but you can play with this, *K1, P2* or *K2, P2* Make sure you knit as you find on the wrong side (watch your bumps) to give that column texture. Check out this video to learn this important stitch.
Right Side (RS) This refers to the front of the piece of fabric you are making

Stockinette Stitch is a combination of rows of knit on the Right Side (RS) and purl on the Wrong Side (WS)
W
Wrong Side (WS) This refers to the back of the piece of fabric you are making (that you won't see when it is worn.
Y
Yarn Over (YO) is a way of making a stitch. This can be used to increase your overall stitch count or to create a decorative lace or eyelet pattern. See how to do it here.
